Creating Your T-Shirt Quilt

Creating Your T-Shirt Quilt

A T-shirt quilt consists of shirts cut into 15” squares set in a grid pattern with 2” sashing (fabric strips) between the blocks. I will work with you to select the sashing and backing colors. If there’s a theme that you’d like to feature such as a sport or hobby, I can usually find a fabric that will reflect it.  Each side of a shirt counts as one block.  Using both sides of a shirt equals two blocks.

  • Select the T-shirts that you would like in your quilt.
  • T-shirts should be washed and dried without fabric softener or dryer sheets.  I back the T-shirts with a fusible interfacing and some fabric softeners prevent the interfacing from adhering to the shirts.
  • Do not cut your T-shirts.
  • To indicate which side of a shirt to use, you can pin a note to the shirt.  “Use this side” or “Use both sides” will tell me what you want.
  • Any T-shirts that are not used will be returned to you.  Remnants (the leftovers of cut T-shirts) will not be returned. I use the remnants to make dog & cat beds that are donated to Underdog Pet Rescue. They are not sent to a landfill.
  • Upon receipt of your t-shirts and down-payment, I will send you an acknowledgment (via email) indicating that I received your order.  I will also give you an approximate completion date.  If you absolutely must have your quilt done by a certain date, please call so we can discuss before you send your shirts.  While I do my best to complete orders in a timely fashion, life has a way of throwing curveballs.  Do not send rush orders unless we have talked. Let’s work together so this is a great experience for both of us.
